I read today’s Prompt which ask me to give up one taste; sweet, salty, bitter, sour and some more which I don’t understand.
I give up none.
I love the fact that I can taste all the richness of the food and smells. Even the bad one. I enjoy in sweetness of chocolate, sourness of lemon, saltines of chips and bitterness of… Actually, I am not a big fan of bitter. but, I wouldn’t even give that one up.
My mum is not of such luck. She has asthma and serious allergy problems, she is allergic to dust. She has been to several surgeries in order to keep her nose clean from polyps. She has to take several medications and inhalers every day.
She has through all of this lost her sensor of smell which only comes back rarely.
But, what you maybe don’t realize is how connected smell is to taste. Sure, she can distinguish sweet from salty, but have you ever ate when you had a cold and your nose was clogged? Yes, exactly. No smell, no taste.

Tastants, chemicals in foods, are detected by taste buds, which consist of special sensory cells. When stimulated, these cells send signals to specific areas of the brain, which make us conscious of the perception of taste. (…) Ultimately, messages about taste and smell converge, allowing us to detect the flavors of food.
I am blessed to taste all of it because:

There is also one extra factor. I was born one month premature, which is bad because in the 8th month of pregnancy lungs are developed. If a baby is born in 7th month it is better because then she/he can artificially develop lungs in the incubator to the fullest. So, yes I am blessed and I am not giving anything away, not even for fun. 🙂
