Whether or not you celebrate Christmas on 25th December or on 7th January and New Year on 31 December or Chinese New Year (I don’t know the date), or you don’t celebrate anything religious, there is probably a time in your house when something is happening. Something is celebrated and things aren’t like they are rest of the year. Decorations come up, people are coming and going, there is more action and stuff going on than regular… And our pets get in the middle of all this. 😀
My cat is my only pet so far that I really had. Others were more like neighborhood pets when we kids would take care of some stray cat. Kiki was my first experience with cats + Christmas tree. Hahaha… Well. Lets just say we get presents, Kiki gets the big ass tree in the living room. 😀
First few years disasters were inevitable. She was playing with ornaments, getting them to fall of, crash few of the balls who left behind that sad silver magic dust of dead Christmas ball… One year she even knocked down the entire tree! 😀 I don’t know how she did it… But last few years she is showing more interest for the tree itself than the decorations. She had realized that we can’t reach her when she is under the tree so she goes there and munch on it, chewing…well…everything. Us yelling and shoo-ing her away doesn’t do much, she does it anyway when we go to sleep. Like a Santa. A hungry vegetarian Santa who munches on Christmas trees. Now that is a start of a horror movie.
Anyhowdilywho… She is more chill with the whole Christmas season. Except – The New Year’s Eve.
We live in a place where people…how do I say it so it doesn’t sound wrong… Like to shoot things. Fireworks. Firecrackers. Firecrackers in a bottle. Rockets. Anything. As long as it’s loud, we do it. I am saying “we” for the sake of the story I don’t do it. I don’t have the time! I have to watch all the fireworks going on 😀
Do not be mistaken – we have an official fireworks going on somewhere in the central square, but we have like thousands of mini fireworks all over the town to gaze upon when the clock hits midnight. For me, that is the best part of New Year’s Eve. For my cat, you guessed right, the worst.
So, we have to take pills from the vet and drug her two times that day so she is a bit sleepy and calmer, otherwise she is hysterical, meowing, panicking and pooping all over the house. It may seem funny but I feel so sorry for her when I see her in such fear. Also, a lot of pets run away, they get scared of the noise. 😦 That is why I am all up for forbidding all the stupid shooting.
First of all, if I found a box next to my bed with “open if you dare” on it, I would freak out a bit over the fact that someone left a box with English sentence on it and maybe thinking I woke up in a parallel universe where we speak English in Croatia. 😉
If it would say “Otvori ako se usudiš” I would probably be less worried. XD
And of course I would open it, what kind of question is that?! A beautifully wrapped box? With a “dare” on it? I am WAY to curious not to open it…
Many people don’t like Christmas music we are bombarded from the end of November. (For the love of God, that’s not even in December!) Of course we don’t like it, it’s TOO MUCH. So, guess what? I don’t listen to radio. I just don’t. I have freedom of actions that helps me turn off the radio. I turn it on or go on Christmas playlist when I feel like it, most likely on Christmas Eve.
On certain places I can’t avoid it that’s for sure. But I tend to go shopping in smaller stores so I am not stuck there for an hour listening to “Jingle Bells” 20 times. XD
Other things are decorations. We are lucky, here in Zagreb, government does not light the street decorations until December 1st. And it’s lovely to see some lights and stars and stuff you don’t get to see all year while the weather is so cold it is promising snow. 🙂
The one thing that makes me love this part of year is the fact you can UNLEASH your inner creative self. 💡
And for a creative bundle of ideas like me, that’s awesome! 🙂 Pull out your colored papers, scissors, glue, all sorts of paint, candles, sprays…. Go nuts with it! You can make your own decorations, you can make presents for other people, you can just plain entertain yourself….For Do It Yourself or DIY this is an awesome part of year. 🙂
I already made some stuff (for Christmas and non-related) and since I am so behind in presenting it here, I will do a different post. With all the pictures, I promise 😀
I was busy busy busy in the holidays, as everyone else. And I had a plan to post some things on blog which I managed, but I did not had time to properly sit down and go through my Christmas photos. Especially the decorations I made! I posted about amazing Do It Yourself ideas for the holidays…and I have tried one! 🙂 – The rose from orange/clementine one, of course, hehe.
It ended up being very easy to make so we continued to make them for decoration even after Xmas. And by “we continued making them” I meant that I forced everyone to peel oranges like this. Poor people. 😀
I love how this decoration is visually very appealing with its bright orange color, plus the scent of freshly peeled orange fills the space… I recommend using it while the orange season is still here.
I know you are dying to see how I incorporated peeled oranges into decorations for holidays, so I’ll grant your wish. 😉
This year I was surfing a lot through ideas for decorating with some sort of rope or yarn… I already have grapevine balls for my tree that go regularly on it, but it is different when you can and have time to make something on your own. It’s better. 😉
I am interested in these type of ornaments because:
a) It is CHEAP. I mean, you literary spend minimal amount of money
b) It’s fun and you can make it however you like and the color you like it in.
So, the tutorial. I was searching one for the Christmas balls and found in this video exactly what I wanted to show you. If do make time to make them on my own, I won’t have time to post and blog as much through the holidays, so I’m putting it now. 🙂
For the other decorations I have asked very nice lady from FB to send me the photos of her little – but awesome project. And she did. Thanks Višnja! 😉
So there it is:
All that you need is aluminum foil, bowl, rope, glue (glue for wood) and spray. First you put the foil over the bowl and then start to make shapes with rope soaked in glue. When you are satisfied you leave it to dry, spray the paint you want and there you go. Your very own DIY decorative bowl!
I found this amazing idea on FB (you can see what page 😉 ) and I will most definitely use it! I love the smell of oranges and even bought the essential oil scented like tangerine or orange I am not sure. Considering that I have app. 2 kg of both at the moment I will play a little inspired by the photo. And there goes also my love for roses. Perfect. 🙂
I don’t know about you, but here things are “heating up”. I am trying to avoid all shopping at any cost in malls because people are buying like there is no tomorrow. And next days won’t be any better. So, that means one thing – we are going to EAT through the holidays, A LOT.
I have found a lot of cute and awesome Xmas ideas for food, both salty and sweet. What do you like more? And cakes. Oh my God… We have to bake cakes… Traditionally in Croatia we eat fish on Christmas Eve, pork and french salad have to be in our Christmas meal and for the cakes we do a lot of them, different kinds. It depends. But the one my holidays are not complete are “orahnjača” (with walnuts) and “makovnjača” (with poppy). Picture below. 😀
Since kitchen and I are more an acquaintances than friends 😀 I think I will make one cake, if I have time two. This is literary my usual take on the baking:
Have a great day and do comment. 🙂
Disclaimer: I found photos on FB page Creative Ideas and makovnjača and orahnjača on coolinarka.com
I like wrapping presents. Ok, that is a huge underestimating. I looooooooove wrapping presents. 😀 That is more interesting to me sometimes than the actual present hahahaha…
I love making something that is not – wrapping presents so from the outside they appear to be something that they are not. My bf knows the joy of that very well. :mr green: Two years ago for his b-day I have made/bought him a custom-made t-shirt and put it in cookie package and put everything so they seem to be not opened. The funny thing is, he was actually happy with getting cookies, but could not understand why I insisted that he opens them RIGHT NOW. 😀 This year, I’ve bought him a wallet and wanted to do the big box – small box thing, when you open big box and then small and smaller… I had a lot of luck and he accidentally left his old wallet at my place and I packed everything, the big box, the paper and decoration paper inside, smaller box and inside his old wallet. He was unwrapping the thing for 15 minutes (he likes to sloooooooowly unwrap, I’m more of a cut it all person 😀 )… The look on his face when he saw his old wallet after all the trouble and laughing was priceless. I said, ok, you don’t want that one and gave him the new wallet.
So, he is quite familiar with my little scams muahahaha 😛
Anyway back to the “do it myself” part featured in this post. This was a chocolate box I wanted to turn into my master piece. 😉 I knew what I wanted on it (japanese spring flower) and found a picture. Then I sketched the outlines and painted the whole thing as I wanted. For the box I knew tempera will be a difficult choice because the material is too smooth for it. But! I wanted that kind of uneven look, somewhere more white, somewhere more black. I always tend to take on challenges… When it starts to look difficult, I go in “bring it on” mode.
Ok, and for the bow/ribbon part I found easy tutorial and it came out good. It would be even better if the material of the ribbon was softer.
This was a present I packed for my friend, I call her Princess so the little box says “Princeza”. 😉 The box is btw from a dairy spread haha 😀
Anyway this is my little joy and I have fun with it… What about you, do you like it or hate it? Tell me ☺
